Geovision iPhone Live View Connection Failed – FIXED!

On September 3, 2009, in Technology, by Mike Waldron

All bummed out because your Geovision iPhone app’s Live View feature just tells you “Connection Failed” or actually “Conneciton Failed” when you try to connect?  I’ll bet you probably have RPB working, but just can’t figure out why Live View refuses to work!

You’ve come to the right place my friend.  Here’s your fix (good luck finding this elsewhere!):

  1. Forward the following ports from your firewall to your Geovision Server: 80/TCP (not pictured below), 4550/TCP, 5550/TCP, 5511/TCP, 8866/TCP.

    Picture 7
The manuals fail to mention that without the control ports forwarded 4550/5550 the Live View will NOT WORK!!!!

  2. Make sure in your Geovision Web Server Setup the following screens look identical to mine pictured below.
    Picture 2

    General Tab

    Picture 3

    Server Tab

    Picture 4

    3GPP Tab

    Picture 6

    Mobile Tab

    Picture 5

    JPG Tab

  3. Now on the iPhone app itself enter your info IDENTICALLY to what’s below (except of course your IP, username and password.  Note the username IS NOT case-sensitive.

    photo

  4. Lastly to improve the video quality (this will make no sense and is totally counterintuitive), click on “image setting” and set Image “Normal Quality” to “Off”.  It should read “Low-bandwidth Image Quality” or something that makes sense.photo(2)

Hooray, it works!!  But I already knew that ;)

UPDATE

Per nick’s comment, if you are receiving an “invalid IP/password” try completely rebooting your Geovision system before troubleshooting further.  Thanks nick!

  1. Aaron says:

I followed your instructions and it seems like it “almost” wants to work. I get to the screen with the white “page dots”, but the camera views never load. Before it would just say “Connection Failed”. So I must be close.

    • Mike Waldron says:

Sounds like a Firewall issue, or possibly you didn’t check all the settings in 3GPP? Also, I just amended my post to include port 80 HTTP to Step 1 which I had mistakenly omitted.. So if you’re not forwarding 80, that could be an issue as well… sorry about that! Let me know how it turns out for you.

  2. Aaron says:

Well we can view the DVR cams remotely using DMMultiView so I don’t think it’s the firewall. I called my DVR provider and they say that we don’t have the very latest version of GeoVision installed and that’s why it doesn’t work. They also said that the most current version isn’t stable enough. My web server configuration tabs do look a little different than the screenshots you have posted. Actually some of my configuration tabs have MORE options than what you are showing. Any thoughts?

  3. Aaron says:

Oh and for some reason our DVR servers are set to port 8000. Not sure if that would affect the iPhone app…

  4. Mike Waldron says:

Aaron, which port is set to 8000? The HTTP port? If so, you can try 1.1.1.1:8000 in the IP field on the iPhone app and see if that fixes it. I’ve heard that non-standard ports are a problem with the iPhone app and they only like the standard/default ports.

  5. I should have thought of that! It got me a little closer. Now I get an IP/Password Error message. So I changed the DVR config and port forwarding to port 80 to stick with the default. I still get the IP/Password Error for live view, but now I can view RPB?! I’m sooooo close….

  6. chris says:

I got it to work right away but only on the network as soon as I’m on 3g, connection failed. I get live view and rpb only on network. I know what your thinking, “Firewall”. everything else works. I use web cam server and v-2 daily and moniter audio. I have an airlink router with upnp and geovision automatically opens the ports. I have this same issue on my other machine on a different network. exactlly the same but a lynksys router with upnp. i also tryed port forward just by chance it at did not work. I’m thinking its something with remote log in. I do not have remote authentication set up, could that be a problem? I have search this problem and have not heard of anyone else having same troubles. Everyone else has nothing for live view and only rpb.

  7. Mike Waldron says:

Chris – If you have it working internally, but not externally, I tend to believe the problem lies within your firewall configuration. Have you tried manually forwarding all the ports I have above versus using uPNP?

You could also try setting your Geovision machine as the DMZ host on your Linksys. If it works, then you just need to forward the ports.

RPB will work with just 80 and 5511 forwarded. However Live View requires 8866, 4550 and 5550 as well.

  8. nick says:

If you get the invalid IP/Password, just reboot your whole computer.. I believe this is a Geovision bug

  9. Mike Waldron says:

Thanks for the addition nick, I went ahead and amended my post at the bottom to include your tip.

  10. Jacob says:

Friends, this application looks for http port 80 specifically. Now those who follows the step above n forwarded port 80 n still get error, it’s not ur application, it is not ur geovision system, it is ur ISP!!! Not all ISPs allow traffic thru port 80 especiallly verizon. So good luck guys.

  11. nick says:

    Hi Jacob,
My 2 Geovision systems work fine on ports 90 and 91 respectively. They just happen to stop working for unknown reasons after a while. Not sure if it’s the number of connects/disconnects or whatever. I have a call with Geovision on this.
But after a while I get the invalid IP/Password. Creating new users and reinstalling the iphone client doesn’t solve it. Only a full reboot of the server resolves it so something gives.

  12. Justin says:

In the screen shot above you have “AUDIO” as the tab, I believe that is incorrectly labeled. It should be “Mobile”. Thanks to your info I was able to get it working. Too bad it looks only for port 80 as I have two different GeoVision DVRs on the same connection. I’m sure they’ll fix it in the future.

  13. Justin says:

Update, I was able to get it to work on a port other than 80!

  14. Jim says:

I got this to work using a non-standard port. I originally had enabled SSL and entered the non-standard port there. The screen shot above got my attention. I disabled SSL and entered my non-standard port in the HTTP box. Works like a champ.

On the iPhone app I appended the non-standard port to the IP address in the IP field (1.1.1.1:802) and left the default port of 8866 in the Port field. Of course, my router forwards the ports mentioned above to my GeoVision computer using the non-standard port in place of port 80.

Thanks for rattling my memory, Mike.

  15. Kevin says:

I have three DVRs at one location, so all of the ports are different: 8080, 8081, 8082 (Can’t use port 80 at the location). Also, 8866, 8867, 8868, etc. Each DVR is setup with the correct ports.

You state the application does not like non-standard ports. Is there any way to change the iPhone software to look for different ports?

  16. Mario says:

    Hi,
I have the 3GPP tab disabled, Do I have to install something in my DVR in order to have 3GPP enabled?

    Thanks, Mario

  17. Miawtwo says:

Hi and thanks for all this informations.
I’m french, I hope you will understand me.

I reach to get the connection with all my camera screens with the good name of its on my Iphone. But all the screens are black…

Is somebody had a solution ?

    Thank you very much.

    Ben

  18. Jim says:

    That did the trick

    Thanks,

    JIm

  19. chris says:

UPDATE: I tried what you recomended with DMZ and still nothing. but i was playing around with different nnections and this is what i found:
on the network (not 3g) but putting in the internet ip address, I get pictures also. so I type my ip address not my local ip and I can connect on network only. so its definatly going through the router. either the phone is blocking it because of 3g or geovision see’s a different ip and blocks it. I dont understand why 3g is different but it is. are you guys connecting on 3g or just local network? I know it sounds weird but I cannot connect on 3g and I can connect on the network internet through my isp ip address. so my feed is definatly coming through my router unblocked. I will verify tomarrow from a different network, and test my other system. I have 2 systems in 2 different locations and 2 iphones. all different conbo’s do the same thing.

  20. Justin says:

    Mario…

Try disabling SSL and disabling “Enhance Network Security” to get the 3GP and Create JPG options available – I had to turn one of those off (cant remember which) before the other options were available to me.

  21. chris says:

    fixed!!!!
ok all fixed. problem was the ip address. when I typed ip address it was noip.myftp.org. because this is how I always log in and this is usually the default port if one is not inputed. why it doesn’t work, I don’t know. so changing ip to noip.myftp.org:80 now logs in on 3g and works. hope this helps someone. I even deleted all the ports I added on my router and it still works. I just use the port mapping feature in geovision. I have one other system that is still not working but i’ll work on that today.

  22. chris says:

yep both are fixed an working. easy way is goto port setting under the server icon and click configure. only works for UPnP routers and the type ip address 60.175.55.89:80 and the follow instructions above thanks for the info.. ocasionaly has conection error but try it again and ts fine. thankyou

  23. Jacob says:

@nick: I have two sites one with Verizon and another one with Cable. The verizon site wont let me forward port 80. So instead as you said 90/91, I have forwarded 8000, but that doesn’t work with GV for iPhone. However, that site can be accessed from internet.

Now the other site with Cable is allowing to forward port 80 and this site work fine with GV for iPhone. As mentioned in the beginning of this thread, forwarding port 4550 is very important to get “Live” view work.

  24. Andre Fogelman says:

On my home´s wi-fi I am able to make it work. When I am on the cellular network it does not work. Anyone know why?

    Andre

  25. Luigi says:

Guys I just spent 2 hours on this with SUCCESS! I hope this is helpful!

I use optonline.net (cablevision). I could never access my router using port 80. Port 80 never worked for anything. So here’s the trick. You follow the steps above in terms of forwarding all the ports. HOWEVER, you should not forward port 80 (won’t work). Forward a new port 8002 or 802. THEN, change the port in the DVR program by goin to Network-> Network port info. Then webcam server (change 80 to 802). FINAL part,

When asked for your IP inside the GV-iView app,
make sure your ip ends with :802 for this case. For ex, random ip… 67.167.87.97:802 (with the colon and the new port to replace 80). Otherwise, 67.167.87.97 defaults to port 80 (which is not our friend). Also, I haven’t checked but I forwarded a range for 3GPP 17300-17300. I haven’t checked if it’s needed but I am excited none-the-less!

  26. Mike Gaul says:

    It Works!!! it works!!! Thanks

  27. Mike F says:

How do you forward ports from firewall to your Geovision Server?

  28. Simon S says:

    Hello,
I have followed the details above and still get the invalid IP/Password error. Have rebooted system and router etc. the screen shots of the Iphone are slightly different version is GV-iview v2.0

  29. Finally says:

After an hour of going through this page over and over again… rebooting.. changing ports..
My problem was that the iphone was connecting via Wifi so it was causing a local loop and not connecting from the external internet. arggg..
    BUT
Has anyone set user security to allow only ONE camera available and for some reason when viewing via the iphone app it ignores this and allows any camera to be viewed!!??
Is this a Geovision security glitch or just me??

  30. Asim says:

    Hi

Having problems. I have checked all ports on gone through step by step but just cant get the live view to work. Works fine on RPB View. i enter my dns name password and username it looks like it wants to start then says connection failed. Please help.

  31. Jose says:

I have tried all instructions up and down. I have verizon and changed ports, but nothing. On the iPhone it seem like as soon as I click on connect, I get the conneciton failed <– Yes it is misspeled on the application. The system version on my DVR is 8.3.0 and according the iPhone aplication it should work with it or higher. Am I missing something here? GGGRRRR

  32. Tony says:

I need some help. I have a payroll system that is forwarded to port 80. I tried to use other ports for it but it doesn’t work. Does that mean I can’t use IView???

  33. aasif says:

hi..my webcam server option does not have the mobile tab. anyone knows what does that mean? do i have to update to a new version.if so how do i do that.i do not have the geovision cd. all i know that its gv800 16chan and it works great.i can also watch from home.somebody pls help me get this sorted out for me to watch from my iphone

  34. Anish says:

I got it to work, only thing missing from the instructions is that, you also need to forward port # 21. That was the only thing missing, n it worked after that.

  35. Anish says:

Seems like most people here are having problems with the firewall. I had the same situation, but later I found out that besides my router, the cable modem from my isp also had a firewall. I had to call them and get it disabled. So make sure that you call and find out about it. After I forwarded all the proper ports on my router, It worked fine. If you aren’t sure about the ports, just enable DMZ and see if you can watch from home. But I wouldn’t recommend leaving DMZ enabled, it makes your router open to the internet. Hope that helps.

  36. maor says:

    hay
i want to watch from i phone . i can”t watch port 80 even from other computer . but if i watch other port like 5555 it works but not from i phone. i open port and allllll the things that i need .yesterday the rpb in the iphone work but live view didnt. i forward other port like 8008 but it still dont work , please helpppppp me

  37. Scott says:

These instructions work perfectly, just double check your port numbers everywhere, geovision, iphone, and firewall’s port fowarding. Works great, thanks for the help!

  38. Jerwmy says:

    Hi all,

Just a quick note to say that the port 80 HTTP mapping IS required, but can be redirected. My setup already had a webserver in it on a different machine so port 80 was being sent to that box, but in my router I redirected 8081 to port 8080 on the CCTV machine and then set the Geovision webserver port to be 8080 to match it.

The trick then is to ensure your URL for LiveView uses the port: http://www.myaddress.com:8081 in my case.

Curiously, that isn’t needed for RPB which apparently doesn’t send anything via the HTTP protocol so simply requires http://www.myaddress.com without any port mapping.

    Good luck!

  39. Pavan says:

umm.. i tried to do this today but everytime it says connectoin failed & i tried everything can anyone help me without confusing me.

    thanks, Pavan

  40. Marty says:

It works! I kept playing with the IP address until it worked. What finally got it going was this:
    Turn HTTPS to “Off”
Enter the IP address you use for remote web access 1.1.1.1:80
    Port default:8866

  41. James says:

I just set this up on our server today.

Just to confirm what you said:

Once the firewall ports were forwarded the only hurdle to overcome was the IP address needed the HTTP(WEB) port after it (ie. :80).

    Worked like a charm.

    Thanks for all the help.

  42. Marvin says:

That worked great. I was banging my head against the wall. Some documentation from Geovision would have been nice. Thanks!

  43. Mike Waldron says:

Man this post is still alive and kicking! Ha

Glad to still be helping everyone out there with Geovision.

  44. Luiz says:

Thx man! It works perfectly! I’m from Brazil and ur help was awesome!

  45. Luiz says:

Thx man! It works perfectly! I’m from Brazil and ur help was awesome!
    Once again…Thx Mike

  46. Forgotten says:

I don’t even have the option to click “create JPEG file” in the geovision software v.8.3. What the hell?

  47. hornerocba says:

    Hi,

I have the application working correctly on my iphone (8gb), I can connect correctly but I can’t see Live View, all cameras says VIDEO LOST. On the other hand, when I conect in RPB I can see all the recordings.

By the way, I also have ssview (Symbian) application running on my Nokia N95, and I do see the cameras Live. I have all ports triggered and forwarded correctly.

Any ideas? Any help much appreciated!

    Pedro.

  48. Mark says:

Hi, just setup the Geovision app on my iPhone4 using the guide on your site. Worked first time!

    Big Thanks!

    Mark.

  49. Donald says:

Yes Mike this site is still helping us newbies to get our cameras to work on our iPhones. For some reason I was not able to connect once I left the house but I noticed that I had not ticked the box for remote access in my Geovision program. It is always something minor that we overlooked. The instructions you gave some time ago lays the groundwork for connecting…thanks. Also it seems that I can only connect on 3G once I leave the house so I turned wifi off in the iPhone4. I just
hope I did right, but I will keep you posted of any changes

  50. Jimmbo says:

First of all, thank you for this very useful and important guide for the right settings – I got crazy for weeks until I found this site – buy the way, I did not expect an error from my side, because it was always working on my Windows Mobile and Symbian machines previously flawlessly – However, I hooked up and getting it to work, but I can’t see the cams in LiveView
    - There is/are only black screen/s and no camera view – like Miawtwo was mentioned –

It’s working on the PC – so the cams are working 100% but I can’t see them on the GV-iView 2.0 App –

Anybody knows, what the problem is ?

    Thanks,
    Jimmbo
